What is style? Why is it a thing?

Every creative person comes to a stage where they decide that they want to start to sell their work. Maybe it’s because you need more room in your studio, or need to fund your art supply obsession or you just want to live out your dream of being a full time artist.

The problem I have heard over and over again from artists that are at this stage is that they are worried that they don’t have a “style” yet.

Why is it so important to have a distinctive style? Are you a "real artist" without one?

The fast answer...yes! Of course you are a real artist!

The problem with not having a recognisable style, or being a bit all over the place with your art is really more of a marketing problem than a creative one.

If you want to take the next steps towards selling your art and creating a collector base that knows what to expect from you then you do need to think a little bit more about what it is you are creating and offering.

Cohesiveness and consistency

These are the two most important elements that need to be considered when you are wanting to begin to market yourself as an artist.

I wish that being an artist was just a matter of creating beauty all day and waiting for the money to roll in. Unfortunately its not that easy, you need to do a bit of yucky business stuff if you really want to make yourself known.

And the topic of style is something that also comes under the heading of cohesiveness and consistency. Having a "look" to your artwork that is recognisable to others is the fastest way to create a name for yourself, however it is not always easy or obvious to find your own style.

Who is this course for?

Do you have friends and family telling you that your artwork is great and that you should sell it?

Does your style seems to be all over the place?

Have you tried a bunch of different styles, techniques and materials trying to find your thing, but can never really stick to anything long enough to get really good at it?

Do you try something out once and then move onto something else when you realise that it’s not as easy as you thought it would be?

Maybe you are super indecisive and can’t quite narrow down or focus on what you actually want to create.

Does this sound familiar?

If it does then this might be the course that you need to get yourself onto the right track. You probably just need a bit of a boost or some motivation and guidance to help you to find your passion and inspiration.

In this 6 week course I will help you to focus in on what it is that you are passionate about creating and help you to hone in your skills and create a collection of artworks that are cohesive and original.

Warning: It won’t be easy.

This is not a class for beginners or people that have only been painting for a few months.

This is for the artists out there that need a boost. That are ready for the next step.

The artists that come along to my workshops all the time and say “ I wish I could be an artist like you but I just can’t come up with a style that is my own” or “ I just can’t seem to get motivated to take that next step”, or “I just don’t have your confidence”.

If this sounds like you then here is the sign that you have been looking for to take the next step.

Although this course will take place over 6 weeks, you can take longer if you need to. That being said, the whole point of setting a timeframe is to help keep you motivated and push you to get out of the creative rut you are in and do the work.

Each week you will be given access to a new class from me, the class will consist of videos and projects that I set with the goal of helping you to explore and develop your own style of creating art with the intention of developing a cohesive collection or series of artworks at the end of the 6 weeks.

Work at your own pace

A new class will be released to you each week. You can revisit old classes and videos. You can also use any materials you have on hand or that you are already familiar with.

Optional Mentoring

You will have to option of purchasing additional one-on-one mentoring sessions with me if you are feeling extra stuck or need some more guidance.

Real time painting videos

While this course is not specifically about "how to paint" I will be showing full videos of myself completing each task to help inspire and guide your own work.

How much time do I need each week to do this course?

What you put into this course is totally up to you. If you can only afford to put in a few hours each week then that’s fine - it’s better than nothing!

But ideally you should be spending at least 5-10hrs each week working on your art skills (that’s only about 1-2 hours per day) to get the most out of this course. However like I said previously, if you need more time then you can work at your own pace. Although the videos and classes will be released to you gradually over 6 weeks, you can revisit previous weeks and once all classes are released you will have access to them indefinitely.

You are the only one that can push yourself to complete the tasks, but I am here to help keep you accountable and check in to see how you are going. You can post discussions and comments that everyone can see and give advice on which will also help to motivate and encourage.

What art supplies/materials do I need?

Note: This is not a "how to paint" class.

I’m not going to really be talking much about the technicalities of painting and drawing…this course is more about building on the skills you have and developing your own distinct style.

I will show you a full length demonstration each week of me doing the task that I have set for you, to give you inspiration and ideas but I will not really be talking much about the technical aspects of creating as everyone will probably be using different materials and subjects anyway.

The choice of materials is up to you - We are developing YOUR personal style.

So I would recommend whatever art materials you are already comfortable with and own. So, for example, If you have never used oil paint before then this is not really the time to start learning! Stick with what you already know and enjoy.

The main item that you will need is a decent sketchbook because this is where you will be putting all your development and classwork. I will discuss sketchbooks and the materials that I plan on using during my demonstrations at the beginning of the course.
